Questions people ask

How do I know a Monero address is valid?
A valid address has the right length (95 characters, or 106 for integrated), a known network prefix and a matching checksum: the last 4 bytes must equal the start of the Keccak-256 hash of the rest. This checker tests all three, so a single mistyped or swapped character is caught.
Can this tell me who owns an address?
No. Monero addresses reveal nothing about their owner or balance. A valid checksum only proves the address is well formed, not that it belongs to the person you think. Confirm addresses through a second channel, especially for large amounts.
What is the difference between addresses starting with 4 and 8?
Addresses starting with 4 are primary (standard) addresses, or integrated addresses if they are 106 characters long. Addresses starting with 8 are subaddresses, which a wallet can generate without limit so different senders can’t link their payments.
What is address poisoning?
Clipboard malware or look-alike addresses that share the first and last few characters with yours. Always compare more than the ends, and copy addresses from your wallet, not from transaction history or chat. The checker highlights the ends to make comparing quick, but you should still check the middle.
